Stanford University Reverses Decision to Cut Eleven Sports Teams.

Only a couple months after Shane Griffith’s iconic NCAA Championship win, Stanford University has decided to reverse their decision to terminate eleven different athletics, which included the wrestling team.

Shane Griffith captured national headlines when he advanced through the tournament sporting a blank, black, singlet without the Stanford name or logo. This captivated sports fans around the country as they rallied behind Shane, Stanford Wrestling, and the student body who clearly was not in favor of this ruling.

After Shane’s huge victory, which is the second-ever NCAA Wrestling Championship to be obtained by Stanford, he used his platform to describe the donations and efforts that have been put into saving these eleven teams. He went on to reveal that the “Keep Stanford Wrestling” campaign raised about $12 million to not just keep it going, but to start a woman’s program and explore legal strategies for the fight. When he was asked what others could to to help the fight, the New Jersey native said to email Stanford officials.

The decision also follows two federal lawsuits that were filed last Wednesday against Stanford by the 36 Varsity Sports Program.

Other teams that have been saved also include synchronized swimming, men’s volleyball, men’s and women’s fencing, field hockey, lightweight rowing, men’s rowing, coed and women’s sailing and squash.

Shane Griffith, along with many other athletes, remains in the transfer pool, but has yet to make a decision or commitment on where he will wrestle next year.
